Two awards in as many weeks for the council’s Environment, Air Quality & Transport team.
Islington was (again) awarded the best inner London borough using the Healthy Streets Scorecard criteria of
Interesting facts:
- The number of Islington households without a car increased from 70.0 % to 72.4 %, and cars per household held at 0.29, one of the lowest levels city‑wide. Yet cars are allowed to dominate our roads by being driven around and by being parked, taking up precious public realm. Time for a change.
- 100% of borough‑managed roads now carry a 20 mph limit though we have to say this is seldom enforced – perhaps some volunteer speed watches are in order !
- Low Traffic Neighbourhood coverage remains high at 47.2 %, comfortably above the Inner London median, and we are very enthusiastic about increasing our family of LTNs and Liveable Neighbourhoods, completing the LNs in the south and consulting on new LNs in the north of the borough.
And the council has also been awarded Bikeability’s Large Organisation of the Year 2025 – as presented by Chris Boardman – for their work to enable different communities to get onto bikes, groups such as women, Disabled people and older people.
Many congratulations to Cllr Rowena Champion and her team on these achievements.
