Islington tops Healthy Streets Scorecard in Inner London for 6th year running !

Some good news for the council and its Transport lead, Cllr Rowena Champion – they’ve come top of the Health Streets Scorecard for Inner London boroughs for the SIXTH year running with a score of 7.61/10 in 2026 from 7.54/10 in 2025.  A big bravo to them all for their work.

Some highlights we’ve picked out:

  • Cycling participation is up to 26.6% hurrah !!
  • One new Liveable Neighbourhood increasing LN/LTN coverage from 47.2% to 48.8% and we are looking forward to progress in implementing these safe, green havens all over the borough – excellent for cycling, and joining them up will be truly transformational.
  • Protected cycle tracks now at 5.7%, again we are looking forward to lots more.
  • School Streets at 50% which is third highest in all London and where children have an opportunity to wheel and cycle on safe roads – for a brief time twice a day.
  • Complete 20mph coverage although we’re not convinced that this is observed by all drivers and there is little if no enforcement
  • Over 70% of Islington house-holds are car-free and car ownership remains low

The Healthy Streets scorecard is a massive piece of work and we’d like to thank all the individuals and organisations who have put in so much work not only to set it up but to maintain and improve year on year.  This year’s new addition is measuring the TERN network, ie the 5% of roads under the management of Transport for London, the ‘red routes’.  The scoring shows that TfL has lots of work to do and sets a baseline for improvements in future years.
