Islington Festival of Cycling – Sunday 25 May at Highbury Fields

Islington council, LCC Central and Cycle Islington are putting on a fab day of cycling which we hope will go some way to replace the usual Free Cycle in central London, cancelled this year by TfL.

We are delighted that Islington Cycling Club, Peddle Power,  Dr Bike and a police bike marking & registering  team will be there to support cyclists old, new, able and not so able and sports-curious.

  • Bikeworks are holding an all Ability Session in Highbury Fields (12pm-4pm) – all ability cycling offering access to a range of adapted cycles including tricycles and wheelchair-mounted cycles.
  • E-Cycle Taxi Service – a free side-by-side, cycle service allowing up to three passengers to enjoy gentle exercise and fresh air while carrying out journeys in their neighbourhood.
  • The Islington Cycling Club ride target audience are people who are already comfortable cycling distances of ~50km at a pace of least 20kmph on the flat and who are interested in joining a cycling club.  Starts at 9am from Highbury fields. Typically start with a 15-minute briefing about group riding safety and then the ride itself usually takes ~2.5 hours, depending on the riders’ ability. Expect to be back at Highbury fields between 12 and 1 depending on the group.
  • Joy Riders will be leading a ride from their bike store on the Andover Estate, leaving at 1300 to join the longer ride at Archway at 1325, returning to the bike store at about 1715 -link to register to come.
  • Cycle Islington will have a stand at Highbury Fields so come and talk to us about our campaign to make the killer junction at Finsbury Park safe, our planned activities and rides for the summer and anything to do with cycling.  John will be there with his famous wooden toys which keep children entertained while adults talk about bikes !
  • Cycle Islington family ride setting off at 1000 from Highbury Fields (link to register to come) and returning at 1200.   We will be cycling to Hackney to experience a lap or two of cycling on closed roads.
  • Cycle Islington’s longer ride sets off from Highbury Fields at 1300 to meet  a group from Camden at Archway to cycle over to Markfield Park,  to see the beam steam engine being powered up at 1430.  There we’ll see colleagues from Hackney and Haringey, have a cafe stop and return to Highbury Fields via the Lea Valley (link to register to come), returning at about 1700

Dusty Knuckle will have their van open and ready for business too; have you tried their coffee yet ?

There is something for everyone so sign up for a ride, get your bike marked and your tyres checked and enjoy a fun day of activities all relating to that wonderful invention of 1817, the bicycle.
