Islington’s Dangerous Junctions 2020 – 2024

The latest LCC Dangerous Junctions update has been released – and sadly nothing much has improved here in Islington.   There was a cycling fatality at the junction at Clerkenwell Road/Farringdon Road which now takes the shameful top place.  The previous No 1 slot went to the junction at Finsbury Park which has fallen to second place this year although, as we know, nothing has been done there.

Cyclists have little option but to dice with heavy traffic going east/west along Clerkenwell Road.  We have been campaigning for improvements for years – see our previous posts on Make the Lanes.   Islington council spent over £900k on plans about 8 years ago – plans which we hope can be dusted off and updated.   Camden council and TfL have made good progress on the Camden side – particularly at Holborn – but the section previously known as ‘the Clerkenwell Boulevard’ remains a dangerous and over crowded route for cyclists.  See our video here.

Have a look at the other Islington junctions classified as dangerous by the LCC criteria – speak to your local councillors about them and take care when cycling through them. What else can you do ?

Please write to the Mayor as part of LCC’s campaign to get action as most serious and fatal collisions happen at junctions.  Fixing them will make cycling in London safer for everyone who wants to use a bike to get about.  We need to keep this issue in the spotlight at a local and at a London level so funding is made available and barriers to progress removed.
