Market Road is a key LCN cycle “route” between Islington and Camden. It has four key destinations on it yet it is unsafe and inhospitable for anyone wishing to cycle. While there is a cycle route on York Way, there is no fit for purpose connection to and from Market Road. There’s plenty of scope for safe, segregated cycle lanes in each direction.
If you aren’t familiar with it, have a look at our video below.
If you know it well, you’ll be only too aware of its shortcomings.
We call on Islington Council to provide a proper cycle route between Islington and Camden, encouraging active travel to Caledonian Park, Lumpy Hill playground, the Tennis Centre and the football pitches. The link would also join to Cycleways C38 (Liverpool Road) and C50 (Hyde Estate/Hemingford Road/York Way)
The council’s LIP (Local Improvement Plan) listed £60k to develop plans for cycle provision improvements and consultation on this road in 2025/26 and we are hoping that funding will be forthcoming – more news on this once TfL (Transport for London) announce their decision on local council funding submissions in late March 2025.
